Technology and Youth Empowerment

The Kenya Union of the Blind is committed to empowering visually impaired youth by providing access to quality education, job placements, and training on assistive devices.

To achieve this, we:

  • Train and provide youth with assistive device computer technology, which converts text into audio files for those who are blind and displays text in large print and high contrast for those who are partially sighted.  (These programs allow visually impaired youth to work with computer programs such as Microsoft Office and internet browsers in the same manner as their sighted counterparts.)
  • Advocate for policies that promote access to training and employment for youth with visual impairment, within the public and private sectors.
  • Place youth with visual impairment within training programs, internships and employment opportunities.
  • Train and mentor youth on life skills, leadership and community service.  The Kenya Union of the Blind also actively involves visually impaired youth within the leadership of the Kenya Union of the Blind.

Why is KUB involved in the rollout of computers and assistive technology to persons with visual impairments?

  • To reduce the cost of education for children and youth with visual impairment (digital formats are less expensive than Braille)
  • To increase the performance of children and youth with visual impairment in school, facilitate the transition from one level of education to the next
  • To increase the employability of youth and adults with visual impairments, enhance their career contribute to career enhancement and provide adults with independence.
